CHAPTER FIFTEEN

"Roger Gleeson," Sean said, eyes scanning the screen. "Forty-four, single, five-foot-ten and a hundred and ninety pounds. Got quite the beard, according to this picture."

The late afternoon sun cast a warm glow over the snow-covered landscape as Peyton maneuvered the SUV through the winding roads of Glacier National Park. After discovering that the saliva on the cigarettes matched Gleeson's DNA, they were now on their way to the security outpost where he worked, hoping he could provide them with some answers about what he'd been doing on that trail earlier this morning.

"His rap sheet includes stalking, harassment, and multiple restraining orders filed against him by various women," Sean continued, his voice somber as he recounted the offenses. "He also had a brief stint in prison for assaulting his ex-girlfriend."

"Sounds like a real charmer," Peyton said sarcastically, her grip tightening on the steering wheel. The thought of someone like Gleeson working in the park made her stomach turn.

"Unfortunately, violence seems to be his MO," Sean added. "I don't want to jump to conclusions, but it's hard not to suspect him."

"The question is, how in the world did he wind up working for the federal government? Didn't they run a background check?"

"Looks like he provided a false date of birth," Sean said. "Criminal records are sorted by name and date of birth, so changing one of the two is a pretty easy way to avoid detection. Plus, it's a lot more subtle than using a fake name. If you give a prospective employer the wrong date of birth, you can at least pretend you made a mistake."

Peyton said nothing. She was lost in thought, imagining all the scenarios that could have led to the violence on the trail. Maybe the attacker had been waiting for an opportunity to attack Tracy. Or perhaps it was a crime of opportunity, and Tracy had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"Did you find anything else that's worth sharing?" she asked Sean.

"Yeah, actually," Sean said, his voice low. "While I was waiting for you to meet me here at the park, I did some digging into Gleeson's past and found out that he'd been fired from his last job as a security guard for excessive use of force."

Peyton's heart rate quickened. It was starting to feel like they were on the right track. "Do we know why?" she asked.

"Not exactly," Sean said. "But I managed to get a hold of one of his former coworkers, and she told me that he had a bit of a temper. Apparently, he used to get angry when people didn't follow the rules, and he wasn't afraid to get physical with them."

The more Peyton heard, the more she grew inclined to think Gleeson was involved in the murders. Still, they wouldn't know anything for sure until they spoke with him.

Their vehicle rounded another curve, and the dense forest began to thin out, giving way to a clearing.

"Wow, this place is so secluded," Peyton murmured, taking in the serene beauty that surrounded them.
